Watercolour Portrait & Paper Size Comparison

watercolour portraits against a wall to show sizes

What is the ideal size for a painting?

I often get asked about the best size for a watercolour portrait. The ideal size for your painting will be determined by the number of subjects and the amount of detail.

The above and below representations should give you an idea about the size difference between the different size options that I offer to clients. Please be advised that an A5 can only accommodate ONE subject successfully. If you feel unsure, I would be happy to advise you on which size would work best for your vision and would accommodate the number of subjects best and quote you accordingly.

Please bear in mind that you cannot add the same amount of facial detail to a face that is only 2cm high as you can to a face painted A2 size; 40 (w) x 60 (h)cm. The smaller the face, the more stylized it will become. The more people you want to add to your artwork, the larger your artwork needs to be.
