What does it mean to Commission a Painting?

A client commissions a portrait when placing an order for a custom piece of art aka Portrait Painting.

How do I go about commissioning (ordering) a painting?

Get back to me with the SIZE of the painting you are interested in.


EMAIL me the reference photograph(s) you want me to paint.


We will discuss all the finer detail.


I will get back to you with a bespoke quotation.


If you accept the quotation – I will forward you the Commission Agreement to sign and the invoice for payment of the deposit.


Your completed Commission Agreement and Proof of payment for the deposit secure your spot on the commission waiting list. NO EXCEPTION.

Do you require a deposit?

YES, I require a deposit AND a signed Commission Agreement in order to confirm your spot on the waiting list. No Exceptions.

What is your payment terms?

Standard Payment Terms

The standard payment terms require a 50% non-refundable deposit to confirm your spot on the commission list and the balance due upon completion of the artwork.

Payment Plans

I do however offer payment plans of up to 6-months. You are welcome to get in touch with me in regards to the different payment options. (Payment plans are only available to clients paying via EFT.)

Do you accept Credit Card payments?

Yes, Credit Card payments can be arranged through PayFast’s secure payment portal.

I need the painting urgently as a gift, how soon can you help me?

Please book your portrait painting early to avoid disappointment. On average my waiting list is 8 to 12 weeks. This depends on my workload at different times of the year. During the peak season (September to March) it might sometimes be longer.

Please be advised that oil paint takes at least one to two weeks to dry before it can be handed over to the client/courier.

IF my commission list AND the time frame allows, I will try my best to fit you in. This can unfortunately NOT be guaranteed. You are however welcome to contact me to discuss the possibility.

Do you paint Portraits from photos and can multiple photos be combined into a painting?

Yes, I do paint from photographs.

Yes, we can combine multiple photographs into a painting IF PRACTICALLY POSSIBLE. You are welcome to EMAIL me the photographs together with an explanation of what you have in mind.

What type of Photographs do you need?

I need good quality photographs to work from. Preferably high resolution that will enable me to ‘zoom in’ to see finer detail.

I know it is not always possible, especially if the subject is deceased – in that case, please email me whatever you have.

What type of portraits do you paint?

I paint contemporary style portraits as well as traditional portraits of people as well as pets.

Do you sell gift vouchers?

Yes, Gift Vouchers are available for purchase. Full payment is required on all Gift Vouchers. I can either email a Gift Voucher to you or sent you a physical Gift Voucher (courier delivery fees would apply).

The recipient of the Voucher has the option of paying in on a larger size portrait when they book their portrait.

My Gift Vouchers are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase.

Do you accept international commissions?

YES, most definitely!

Worldwide shipping is available! International shipping needs to be quoted.

I need a larger painting, can you help?

Yes, I can. Kindly contact me for a bespoke quotation. The price will depend on the size of the painting, the amount of detail, the number of subjects, etc.


Copyright and how does it affect me?

The artist, Celia van Niekerk, retains all copyright of the finished artwork. The finished artwork may be used by the client (you) for display and personal enjoyment only. No prints or copies shall be made, or profit gained in any way, from the finished artwork by the Client (you), without the express written permission of the artist (Celia van Niekerk). The artist retains the right to use the image for advertising artistic services, through printed adverts (e.g. flyers, portfolio books) and digital media or social media (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, Website, etc.) The Client is not permitted to make any changes to the original artwork, e.g. drawing or painting on the artwork. Digital artwork can be used for personal use only and not for reselling purposes. When posting artwork on Social Media, the Client is obligated to tag or mention the Artist.

Contemporary Portrait Paintings are single, square portraits on an abstract background. Suitable for humans and pets.
